CMC Mercy Hospital Designs Serene Healing Garden with Bomanite Textured Concrete

The Dr. Sanford and Lois Benjamin Healing Garden is a welcome haven enhanced and architecturally engineered using Bomanite Imprint Systems with Bomacron decorative concrete patterns installed by licensee, Carolina Bomanite. What used to be a plain gray concrete pad adjacent to the emergency room waiting area at Carolina Medical Center-Mercy in Charlotte, NC, is now a beautiful 4,000 square foot garden where loved ones and hospital staff can relax and heal. The serene area has a courtyard, sitting areas, walkways and plenty of landscaping.

Carolina Bomanite worked carefully with the Landscape Architect, Bloc Designto turn the space into a tranquil garden, designed with intentional and specific elements that aid in therapeutic benefits to all cognitive aspects of a person including emotional, physical, and spiritual. The 1,500 square feet of Bomanite imprinted concrete has multiple textures, colors, and patterns including Bomacron Regular Slate and Bomacron Small Sandstone. Pebbles and stones were strategically placed and included into the walkways to provide a tranquil, but easy to navigate setting. The text in the decorative concrete circle was “etched” into the concrete and Bomanite Con-Color was used to highlight the thought provoking words.

A donor wall recognizes the people who supported the donor funded project. Prominent in the garden is an outdoor pergola, a vegetated vertical wall (called a Living Wall), focal point sculpture, lush vegetation, and seating.  As stated in this Charlotte Observer article, “The garden is meant to be a healing space where staff and caregivers can take a break and where patients and family members can come to get out of the hospital atmosphere and heal. Patients who are waiting for test results or recovering from surgery may find the garden to be a peaceful environment during stressful times.”

During construction, the location and access to this small area directly outside of a busy hospital emergency entrance created a difficult work environment for the crew. Most days their trucks had to park two blocks away in a small back lot behind the hospital. From seemingly chaotic stressful challenges of the construction site emerged a truly beautiful healing garden that features gorgeous decorative concrete for this busy uptown hospital. The Bomanite Imprinted Concrete System is not only pleasing to the eye, it obviously also helps in the healing of body and spirit for patients, visitors and staff.

First Texas Honda Installs Bomanite Systems

To meet specific flooring design requirements throughout the building, Licensee Texas Bomanite, worked with project designer Architect’s Inc. in the initial design phase for First Texas Honda. The result ended with four different flooring systems to accommodate the long-standing dealerships future expansion. Founded in 1964 as Continental Cars, First Texas Honda is a part of family-owned and operated Continental Automotive Group in Austin. In late 2012, they completed a state-of-the-art renovation to the Steck Avenue showroom making it the largest Honda dealership in the world at over 140,000 square feet.

Texas Bomanite installed 95,665 square feet of Bomanite Custom diamond polished concrete flooring in the service areas and service drive. The finishes ranged from 800 grit to 100 grit. In the showroom area and service building, 37,150 square feet of custom colored Bomanite Micro-Top was installed with over 40,000 linear feet of decorative scoring. The highlight of the showroom was the Honda logo. 270 square feet of the front entry features the Bomanite Broadcast Aggregate system, and the front entry walks and bridge deck features over 7,515 square feet of the Bomanite’s Sandscape Exposed Aggregate system.

Bomanite Exposed Aggregate System – Sandscape Texture
Bomanite Sandscape® Texture is designed for outdoor applications where an alternate to a conventional concrete finish is required. Utilizing specialized mix designs, additives, topical treatments and advanced application procedures, Bomanite Sandscape Texture resembles sand blasted concrete. First Texas Honda chose Sandscape Texture for the exterior walkways for its durability in all-weather situations, slip resistance for pedestrians and durability for car parking.

Bomanite Toppings System – Broadcast Aggregate
The Bomanite Broadcast Aggregate System is a multi-layered architectural and protective flooring system with a non-skid decorative surface. Bomanite Broadcast Aggregate uses a multitude of surface seeded fine aggregates such as colored quartz, silica carbide or other hard minerals that create a highly durable, minimal maintenance surface which is easy to clean and maintain in a wide variety of environments including the First Texas Honda entry way that was custom colored to complement the recognizable Honda Blue.

Bomanite Toppings Systems – Micro-Top
The Bomanite Micro-Top system utilizes a troweled-on cementitious topping that tenaciously bonds to virtually any substrate, including concrete, wood, metal, plastic or asphalt. Micro-Top can be installed as interior flooring, spotted as accent areas, continued up a wall, traversed up the side of a building or applied directly to a street section or used for logo creation. Micro-Top offers the unique ability to cover a variety of surfaces with a wide range of colors and graphics, while also providing a cost-effective method to achieve multiple colors without the excessive costs associated with elaborate forming and design work, making it the perfect selection for the Honda Logo and continuation of the Honda brand throughout the showroom and customer service areas.

Bomanite Custom Polishing Systems – VitraFlor
VitraFlor utilizes select un-colored concrete that is placed and finished to standards required for decorative polished concrete flooring. The concrete is ground to expose the desired amount of aggregate, then polished to the required gloss level and treated with a Bomanite stain resist. The primary benefit to Bomanite VitraFlor is the simplicity of installation, durability and low maintenance of the finished floor. With no topical dyes or products utilized to color the concrete, this makes Bomanite VitraFlor cost effective in comparison to other more labor and product intensive systems and an easy choice for First Texas Honda Service Bay areas.

Bomanite’s Decorative Concrete Evolves as Designers Push Envelope

Bomanite was recently recognized in a Denver publication InnovatioNews.

DENVER — The leading edge of design will always be in the distance, a constant challenge most in the building industry find compelling.

Designers want to innovate because their clients expect a wow factor in the finished product. Builders must make it happen, stretching to find subcontractors with the precise knowledge, skill, and equipment required to deliver whatever the leading-edge innovation is.

For both designers and builders, keeping up with the curve is critical. When it comes to high-performance, indoor/outdoor, hard surfaces, Bomanite is the most recognized name in architectural concrete.

“Architects are often looking for something new or unique, an answer to a problem. That’s where we excel,” says Terry Grimble, director of technical services for The Bomanite Company.

Bomanite Director of Technical Services Terry Grimble

With a 70-year history, Bomanite is recognized as the inventor of stamped concrete, exclusively establishing the techniques and market for high-performance, imprinted, decorative, and ornamental concrete in the 1950’s.

Today, Bomanite products are being installed independently by licensed contractors in Colorado and all over the U.S. on commercial and residential projects of every scope and scale.

Bomanite’s collective knowledge and resources are available to each of the 50 independent contractors across the country when challenges arise and technical or logistical expertise is required.

When Texas Christian University renovated their football stadium the design objective for Founder’s Plaza was to emulate a map view of Fort Worth, Texas including city streets, railroad tracks and the Trinity River.

After offering design assistance in planning 40,000-SF of highly decorative exterior walkways around the stadium, Texas Bomanite completed the installation of multiple finishes, with logos, lights and letters imbedded throughout.

Being able to draw upon the collective knowledge of the Bomanite Company and 49 other colleague contractors working with Bomanite products is always an asset.

“Our goal is to be able to economically recreate all of the finishes we develop on a much larger scale, in a way that can be installed using tools and equipment common to the industry at generally any place in the U.S.,” says Grimble.

In addition to establishing the chemical compositions and installation techniques for products, Bomanite also produces technical details and product samples that can be shared with architects for specification, and marketing materials for licensees.

The increased desire for public wet-play surfaces like those found in water parks has also contributed to the growing range of decorative concrete products offered today.

At the Tandy Family YMCA in Tulsa, Okla., designer GH2 Architects introduced a dynamic splash pad at the main entrance as a public amenity. With any wet play surface, hardscape materials need to account for a coefficient of friction to make them safe for energetic, bare foot play on a hot summer day.

Bomanite Sandscape is ideal, combining locally sourced aggregates, colored sands, and custom glass to create a granulated surface texture speckled with shiny glass jewels.

GH2 and the Y’s leadership selected a combination of Bomanite Revealed (Custom Blue Glass) and Bomanite Sandscape Texture (Gobi Desert Integral Color) techniques.

“This project called for high-impact, aesthetically pleasing, and long-lasting architectural concrete,” says Jeremy Carlisle, associate principal with GH2 Architects in Tulsa.

“Perhaps just as importantly, we needed it to be installed by a team with the technical knowledge to tackle a very challenging configuration and complex coordination.”

The company said it takes pride in the meticulous development of compositions and finishing processes that can be readily installed in the field. With practicality for the builder, durability for the product, and high-quality for the owner all in mind, Bomanite goes through as many as 50 iterations before finalizing the technical details of laying a new type of concrete surface.

An example of a newer product, the Bomanite Antico process is used to create fissures, voids, and other random effects simulating a semi-worn stone surface comparable to natural pitted limestone or a travertine tile.

When the Northside Church in Clovis, Ca. decided to reinvent the plaza space in front of the church as a dynamic new baptismal center, their primary goal was to create a place where people feel welcome and connected.

There, designers selected a combination of the Bomanite Sandscape Refined Antico finish in Bomanite Light Brown and three integral colors in a Bomanite Sandscape finish to get the cohesive yet varied look they wanted.

“Decorative concrete is wonderfully flexible in terms of being able to create virtually any combination of color and texture and shape imaginable at a reasonable cost,” says Terry Broussard, principal with Broussard Associates, who led landscape architecture services for the redeveloped space in front of the church.

“Bomanite’s products are a very viable solution for public spaces where design matters and ordinary broom finished concrete isn’t going to feel special.”

Samples are a critical component of the product specification process taking place in design studios across the country, and decorative concrete finds no exception for either size or complexity.

“Concrete isn’t paint,” says Grimble with a smile. “There are a lot of variables, from the selected aggregate’s specific gravity and color influences to the ready-mix producer’s material composition.”

Standardized and custom 3-inch square chips developed in Bomanite’s Denver, CO laboratory allow architects, owners, and contractors to hold the real thing on a smaller scale, demonstrating clearly that design intent is understood.

“These samples are basically a business card and we are heavily invested in controlling quality and confidence in the finished project. They are far more accurate than a color chart or product photograph could ever be.”

While the edge of design will always be elusive, innovation is constant and Bomanite said it allows the building industry to continually increase their wow factor expectations.

Garmin Expansion Calls For Pedestrian Pathway

Bomanite Licensee, Musselman & Hall Contractors (M&H) worked with local architecture firm Gould Evans during the design development phase of the Garmin Expansion project. M&H assisted with the project specifications and samples. The design team and owner’s representatives visited the M&H architectural concrete showroom multiple times to discuss project particulars and review samples until the team was able to fine tune the project finishes.

Musselman & Hall placed 40,800 SF pedestrian plaza as part of a building expansion project at the Garmin headquarters in Olathe, KS. Nearly 25,800 SF of the plaza was done utilizing the Bomanite Sandscape Texture Finish, Multiple planter beds, cast-in-place Sandscape finished concrete benches, a continuous 1’ x 8’ joint spacing, and the detailed stain pattern created unique challenges to this project.

The entire plaza was saw cut and v grooved, or bevel cut, on a 1’ x 8’ joint spacing, joint layout was extremely critical. The jointing was continuous throughout the 700’ long plaza. Any variance in joint layout would be obvious and would not be acceptable.

M&H used Bomanite Con-Color to stain the Sandscape Texture portion of the plaza. The stain pattern incorporated three Bomanite Con-Colors; Cobblestone Gray, Nickel Gray, and Natural Gray. The stained Sandscape was then sealed with BomaSeal C-18.

This is a beautiful project and exhibits the potential and beauty of quality architectural concrete. This project won the Gold Award for the Best Bomanite Exposed Aggregate Project.

Bomanite Con-Color is a tinted, non-toxic, odorless, hydrolyzed lithium quartz compound that penetrates into concrete and cementitious toppings, reacting to form a hard, abrasion resistant permanent crystalline structure. Bomanite Con-Color will allow the concrete or topping to breathe, permitting moisture vapor transmission, but retards the transfer of damaging and discoloring alkali materials. When applied to concrete, Bomanite Con-Color will provide variegated and translucent coloring effects without creating a film or coating that can be worn away. Bomanite Con-Color is a viable alternative to traditional acid-based stains when a larger color palette or ease of installation is required. Bomanite Con-Color is an excellent design choice for plazas, walkways, entertainment venues, graphical signs and vertical surfaces.

Advantages of Designing with Bomanite Con-Color
• Wide range of colors
• Compatible with all cementitious Bomanite systems
• Allows necessary vapor transmission
• Eliminates dusting of concrete
• Increases concrete’s density at the surface
• Increases surface abrasion resistance
